Passing a US Navy Vessel

During our repositioning from FL to MD; shortly after our Norfolk, VA departure (June 2023), we had our first VHF announcement, one we have never heard, “to be a submarine in the area and to remain 500 ft clear of it“.

We found lots of traffic on the channel between the navy, bargees and recreational boaters but we’re pleased to finally be in the Chesapeake Bay area along northern Virginia.

• Never Approach within 100 Yards
• Passing within 100 Yards, You Must Contact the US Navy Vessel or the USCG Escort Vessel (VHF-FM Channel 16)
• Stay within 500 Yards of any US Navy Vessel
