Deep draft (6+’) vessels should time their fuel needs as zones become notoriously shallow at low tide.
Departure right at the top of the slack tide allows you to ride favorable outgoing current all the way down into Lower New York Bay.
Hail Water Taxi on VHF Channel 9.
Main North Hempstead Town Dock to fill up your water tanks or offload gear, is strictly for active loading and unloading. Never leave your boat unattended there.
Mooring Balls are yellow tops.
Mooring field has good black mud holding with some wind protection depending on direction.
Mooring Ball includes the Water Taxi fee ($8/PP/Roundtrip).
Older Mooring Balls are yellow and blue, newer replacement balls closer to the city dock are yellow and red.
Pick up any yellow (top)/blue (bottom) or yellow (top)/red (bottom) Town Mooring Ball first, then call the Town of North Hempstead Town Dock office at 516-767-1691 with your ball number followed by details (payment and vessel info).
Private mooring balls scattered throughout the bay, do not accidentally pick up those.
Rail service to Manhattan, NY is less than an hour.
Roughly 2 hours away from the Battery and the Statue of Liberty.
Several vessels, usually sailboats like to anchor near the outside mooring balls.
Skip the water taxi and use your dinghy for provisioning, as there is a dedicated north dinghy dock located right by the Stop & Shop supermarket, allowing you to wheel a cart straight toward your tender.
There are no public shore side showers.
Town Dock offers complimentary pump out, trash disposal and water.
Town enforces strict environmental rules at the pier. Absolutely no fish or food waste is permitted in the shore side trash dumpsters.
Transient moorings are located south of the main channel between nuns 4 and 6.
Travelling southbound, Manhasset Bay is widely considered the best staging ground on western Long Island Sound before tackling Hell Gate and the East River.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we returned on way back to our home port.
