Stay Again: ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Booted off our Mooring Ball#E01A. Booked through Dockwa. Jacques confirmed the Mooring Ball via Dockwa and verbal ball assignment with Ken D, E01A (echo-0-1-alpha) 45 minutes before our approach. Confirmed. At which time told to call with any questions as VHF is not monitored. Reference the map. We got it! We were told there are only two Mooring Balls that can accommodate us on the inside where we’re assigned.

After being moored for two hours (2PM – 4PM), someone knocked on the hull, but we didn’t see anyone. I looked, and it was a child and man in a tender. Jacques proceeds outdoors. Person told him that we had to move. So, of course, Jacques asks the person asked who he was, Ken the same person Jacques had been speaking with.

Jacques stepped inside to grab his phone showing Ken the Dockwa chat and provided map. Didn’t care but, nasty to say we had to move anyways. Ken further claimed these were all private moorings, and since a Nor’Easter was coming on Sunday (9/20/26), every transient would have to vacate the field anyway. So, Jacques said, “but our REZ is until Monday“, didn’t matter we can’t stay. Further mentioned this particular Mooring Ball (E01A) can’t hold us anyway, so we have to move. Jacques further inquired, but aren’t the Inside Mooring Ball#E01A & Mooring Ball#D01A the designated two to hold us? He left via tender with presumably his son roughly 6 – 9 years old.

We proceeded to the next Mooring Ball #D01A; Jacques driving from the cockpit and I on starboard by the door to grab the pick up stick. Just then he rushes back over via tender to say that the line was completely tangled just as I was beginning to thread the eye. Ken struggled to untangle them from under the mooring ball. Eventually, he moved out of our sight, before we could make it to the bow, he tossed the starboard line up over our bow rail and muck went flying everywhere. Jacques expressed his dissatisfaction and his response, “get the f@#k out of here, I’m cancelling your reservation“! Tossed the port side line back in the water and left. As promised, he canceled it via Dockwa. (WOW, cruising up and down the East Coast, that’s a first!) Deliberate on his part because the staff cancelling erases the Dockwa REZ and chats from the consumer access and ability to leave a negative review. Clever way, to maintain a high star rating! Jacques has reached out to Dockwa directly as a result of our experience.

We briefly remained moored and frantically began unexpectedly researching a last minute alternative options in unfamiliar waters (with a 6′ draft) as the Harbormaster passed by shortly after the incident.

We purposely chose to moor in Sag Harbor, NY for the weekend to dine, explore, and shop as first-timers. Needless, to mention this was not the positive experience we encountered! As a personal result of our mooring experience at Sag Harbor Launch, Moorings & Services (Sag Harbor, NY) we cannot recommend to our boating community.

Jacques reached out to Dockwa directly regarding our experience. Dockwa issued a full refund of $450 in a timely fashion. Beyond the refund, Ken (who manages and owns it) handling of the situation posed a safety issue to us and our vessel (6′ draft and 50′ LOA) as we were forced to unexpectedly plan for an alternative option on a whim, which by our standards is unacceptable business practice.

On the bright side we just saved ourselves $450!

TIP: Anchor (N41°0.568′ W72°16.534′) on the east end of the Break Wall where the Outer Mooring Field is located for a muddy bottom.

Note: As of 2026, anchoring is prohibited within 50′ markers and moorings. The fairway area between 500′ – 1,500′ from the shore is reserved for boat traffic and recreation. Long term anchoring is prohibited! Outer Management Area exceeding 48 hours require a permit from the Sag Harbor Harbormaster beforehand.

*By the outer harbor mooring field area we noticed a floating dock. Nothing charted nor markings, anchored far enough away, we later learned it’s a floating dock for seaplanes to drop off and pick up passengers.
