Comments: Birdseye Rooftop Tavern (Gloucester, MA) at the Beauport Hotel (Gloucester, MA) offers sunset views over the harbor, cocktails and seasonal live acoustic duos.

Black Water Hose tends to breathe bacteria growth, especially hot in the sun as offered. The water faucet on the dock is harbor water and the water faucet up the gangway by the building is potable (roughly 200′ away), however all water faucets are shared amongst transients. More importantly, the offered black hose is what we noticed transients using for both dirty and potable drinking water. Not the most convenient set up. We used our own linked proper water hose to fill our tank.

Classic, no-frills local tavern experience, The Rhumb Line (Gloucester, MA) hosts live music seven nights a week, heavily featuring blues, acoustic sessions, and rock.

Closed on weekends. Main headquarters and reservation desk operates Monday – Friday from 9AM – 5PM. However, docks are accessible 24/7 for confirmed transient boaters with a active reservation. Dock hand, Tucker does reside within walking distance.

Commercial fishing vessels tend to depart between 6AM – 7AM and return between 12PM – 1PM.

Did not notice any table or area to fold laundry for anyone using the machines.

Dock sits right at the head of the outer harbor, so it is exposed to wakes from commercial fishing and recreational vessels to/from the sea. Also, known to experience a slight roll depending on wind direction.

During our stay, either residents and/or staff utilize the docks.

During our transient stay one particular vessel was notorious for leaving the water hooked to his vessel and leaving the property for hours/ all day. Then gripe about the water being disconnected.

Gloucester home to early rising commercial fishermen, kitchens tend to close earlier than in major cities, wrapping up dinner service by 9PM or 10PM, even during peak summer months.

Gloucester Harbor Launch is an on-demand water taxi service operated by the Harbormaster. Costs $5/PP, 7 days a week from 8AM – 10PM, and can be hailed directly by calling 978-726-0155 or hailing VHF Channel 72.

Located at the head of Gloucester Harbor at the historic Paint Factory site.

No frills docks, meaning no: fuel, pump out, and/or restaurant. Although, rates are comparable to surrounding full service marinas.

Ocean Alliance, Inc, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Mission to protect whales and their ocean environment through research, scientific collaboration, public education, and the arts. Dock fees goes directly to supporting ocean research and conservation.

One water line is shared amongst docked vessels.

Only accepts boats with a minimum LOA of 38′ due to the wake in the Harbor.

On arrival, the dock hand (Tucker) placed our stern line unattached on the dock while the engine was still running. I ended up lassoing the bow line myself. On of the office staff came out to assist him, based on our observation, he lacks experience.

On summer Thursday nights, the Rocky Neck Cultural District comes alive with “Culture Splash” an evening initiative featuring open art studios, demonstrations, and community art-making along the water.

Popular waterfront seafood spots The Rudder (Gloucester, MA) and The Studio (Gloucester, MA) both permanently closed. The 51 Rocky Neck (Gloucester, MA) opened in August 2024 formerly The Studio place.

Requires a phone call as they do not use VHF.

Requesting for more space between us and our stern neighbor (their bow to our stern) upon messaging in Dockwa the dock hand (Tucker) did return to place their research vessel outboard engines down (located on the linear dock T-head end) for us to move forward. Our bow then protruding roughly 10′ past the end of the dock. On the opposing end of the dock, the sailboat protruded nearly 8′ from the dock with a vessel between us as well with less than 1′. When I asked (Tucker), if they always pack vessels this tight on a known rolly dock his response, was, “well, it’s only a boat. Those other two vessels are repeat customers we try to make happy“. At that point, I had to walk away then trying to reason with a 20/+ young adult.

Slip rental via Dockshare, Dockwa, or Toro.

Summer Peak (June–August) the Main Street and the harbor are vibrant.

The parking lot linked fence gate remained open during our stay.

Unbeatable location for Independence Day fireworks.

Upon our arrival we were treated to a complimentary tour of Ocean Alliance, Inc. The onsite historical landmark, built in 1874, Tarr & Wonson’s Copper Paint Factory (Gloucester, MA) is condemned due to interior cooper pollution.

Vehicle loaner available for a $40/day donation. Cash or check accepted. Drivers license and proof of insurance required.

Water taxi service provides hop-on/hop-off shuttle at the historic Paint Factory docks, the Gloucester Water Shuttle, operated by Cape Ann Harbor Tours. M/V Lady Jillian connects Gloucester’s two main cultural districts: Harbortown and Rocky Neck (where the Ocean Alliance Docks are located). No reservation required. Purchase tickets and pay directly onboard the boat, all-day pass costs $15/PP and allows for unlimited hop-on/hop-off rides throughout the day. Operates daily from 12PM – 5PM, runs continuously on a continuous hourly loop. Picks up at the Rocky Neck stop (Ocean Alliance Docks) at 30 minutes past every hour.

We were the only vessel docked here and were surprised by the evening traffic on the docks. Since, a combo code is required to access the gangway via a building passage they must be residents or staff after hours.

When the water police were floating around like on July 4th is the most respect the “no wake” was noted.

Winter Slumber (November – April), the town is noticeably much quieter. Many tourist centric shops close early, and local action consolidates into a few reliable year round pubs.

Within 1/10 mile walking distance to the Rocky Neck Cultural District with galleries, parks, restaurants, and shops.

Stay Again: Maybe

*The downgraded star from our three stars representing satisfaction reflects how tightly packed vessels are dock in known rolly conditions. Our stern neighbors anchor was 15″ behind our swim platform staples, which in stretching lines given the pitching posed a concern. We did add a second spring line and requested that the vessel behind us do the same.

While docked we always respect whatever regulations and rules imposed by a marina or owner(s). We never expect our vessel for a fee be in unsafe conditions.
