On Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 8:30AM – 4PM Janet participated in Women in Boating course hosted at Shelter Cove Yacht Basin (North East, MD) offered by Jackson Marine Sales, Inc.
This basic course is designed to help prepare women to be able to comfortably and confidently handle a power boat both for pleasure and/or to be prepared in the event of being unexpectedly in charge. We offer both hands-on instruction aboard a power boat and classroom instruction to groups of 4 – 7 women.
The in-water portion is offered aboard a power boat with Captain Diane Johnson instructing. Each participant will have a hands-on experience. Basics such as how to stop, start and reverse an engine as well as how to throw a line will be demonstrated and experienced. You will learn how to approach and back out from a fuel dock. You will learn how to anchor your vessel and retrieve the anchor. Safety issues will also be addressed. Learn how to operate a radio and use a fire extinguisher, and what to do in case of a “person overboard”. You will learn how to get your vessel safely to port if you are suddenly in charge in the event of an emergency. Classroom instruction will cover the basic “rules of the road”. Learn proper nomenclature and boating etiquette. Learn what causes boating mishaps and how to minimize risks, and what equipment needs to be on board. Learn the basics of reading a chart and tying nautical knots.
Goal is to help you maximize your boating experience by being an active participant who is able to confidently operate a vessel for pleasure and who is able to take charge in the event of a crisis. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Cost: $75.
